INEC Seeks Traditional Rulers’ Cooperation Ahead of 2027 General Elections
Prof. Joash Amupitan meets traditional rulers from Kogi’s 21 LGAs, seeking their cooperation in promoting peaceful and credible elections in 2027.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has appealed to traditional rulers in Kogi State to play an active role in ensuring peaceful and credible elections as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, made the appeal on Thursday while meeting with traditional rulers from the 21 local government areas of Kogi State in Lokoja.
Amupitan said the visit was part of the commission’s efforts to evaluate its level of preparedness, particularly the readiness of its personnel and infrastructure, for the 2027 general elections and the upcoming off-cycle governorship election.
He stressed that INEC was working to strengthen its operational capabilities through infrastructure upgrades and the adoption of modern technology to guarantee smooth and transparent electoral activities.
The chairman also encouraged traditional rulers to use their positions and grassroots influence to educate residents on the importance of peaceful elections, voter awareness and respect for credible electoral outcomes.
Also addressing the gathering, the Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Shehu Wahab, praised the traditional rulers for their consistent support and cooperation with the electoral body.
He emphasised that traditional institutions were important partners in the electoral process, noting that their contributions were essential to maintaining peace and motivating citizens to exercise their democratic rights.
The traditional rulers, in their response, assured INEC of their willingness to support the commission’s efforts. They also pledged to communicate Amupitan’s message to their respective communities and promote peaceful, transparent and credible elections.
Earlier in the day, the INEC chairman inaugurated the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) storage centre at the commission’s state headquarters in Lokoja.
The facility forms part of INEC’s efforts to strengthen its operational infrastructure and improve its preparedness for upcoming elections.
