President Bola Tinubu has launched a fresh attack on former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, alleging that he failed to confront erosion problems in the state and questioning whether he possesses the leadership qualities needed to become Nigeria’s president.

Tinubu made the comments on Friday while addressing supporters at an APC rally held at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as part of his political activities ahead of the 2027 general election.

The President urged voters to reject Obi, who is seeking the presidency under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), while highlighting what he described as differences in their records on addressing environmental challenges.

Using Lagos State and Akwa Ibom as examples, Tinubu contrasted his efforts to tackle coastal challenges with Obi’s performance in Anambra and Governor Umo Eno’s response to erosion in Akwa Ibom.

“He’s in one party, they called NDC, who is running for President; he ran away from erosion in Anambra State. He could not confront erosion,” the President said.

He added: “I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I confronted the Atlantic Ocean, I tamed it for you. Umo Eno confronted the erosion in Akwa Ibom, and it’s working for you.”

Tinubu also questioned Obi’s political decisions, particularly his exit from the PDP and move to the NDC, arguing that the development reflected a lack of leadership character.

“They lack leadership character and traits,” he declared.

The President went on to criticise Obi for leaving a party he had previously been associated with, suggesting that his decision to move elsewhere over what he described as a minor disagreement raised questions about his ability to lead.

“If a man that once upon a time was a baby of PDP became a father of PDP and because of a little inconvenience he ran away from that party and formed a dangerous aide-de-camp in another party, is that a leadership trait? Is that a leadership character?” Tinubu asked.

He further urged Nigerians to reconsider Obi’s presidential ambition, insisting that the former Anambra governor was not capable of managing the affairs of the country.

“And he wants you to vote for him; it’s not for banana. He cannot put a house in order,” he said.

Tinubu’s appearance at the rally followed his visit to Akwa Ibom, where he commissioned projects delivered by Governor Umo Eno’s administration before proceeding to the APC gathering in Uyo.
