Iran has executed two men convicted of spying for Israel, the judiciary announced on Monday, as authorities continue a wave of executions tied to alleged espionage cases.

According to the judiciary’s news outlet, Mizan, Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat were executed after being found guilty of providing intelligence to Israel’s Mossad agency.

“Omid Behzad and Pouria Safvat were hanged this morning for transmitting the coordinates of sensitive military and security sites to Mossad agents,” Mizan reported.

The judiciary said the two men were convicted of “espionage and collaboration with the Zionist regime,” although it did not reveal when they were arrested or prosecuted.

Mizan alleged that the pair supplied information on military and security facilities during the ongoing conflict.

“They helped the intelligence services achieve their objectives by providing them with information on military and security centres during the war.”

Iran has stepped up executions since the war with Israel and the United States began on February 28, following large-scale US-Israeli strikes that reportedly killed Iran’s supreme leader. Many of those sentenced to death have been accused of working with Israeli intelligence.

According to rights groups, including Amnesty International, Iran carries out more executions than any country except China.

Data compiled by Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) show that 1,639 executions were carried out in Iran last year, the highest figure recorded since 1989.

Amnesty International last week criticised what it called an “escalation” in executions after Iranian authorities announced the execution of two men convicted over their involvement in anti-government protests during the winter.
