The World Cup topped Nigeria’s Google searches in 2026, followed by AFCON heartbreak, the Blord-VDM controversy, ‘67’ meme and major entertainment stories.

The FIFA World Cup emerged as the dominant search topic among Nigerians between January and July 2026, while the Super Eagles’ AFCON disappointment, the Blord–VeryDarkMan controversy and the viral “67” Gen Z meme also attracted widespread attention.

New Google Trends data released for the first seven months of the year showed that Nigerians relied heavily on Google to understand major sporting events, international conflicts, celebrity controversies, deaths, internet trends and issues with direct implications for their daily lives.

“Every big story now has a second life in the search bar,” Google said.

“When the Super Eagles lost a semi-final on penalties, when a strait most people had never thought about pushed up the price of petrol, when a music promoter’s car crash reopened a three-year-old argument, Nigerians went to Google.”

The FIFA World Cup recorded the highest level of search interest during the period, far exceeding other major stories.

The tournament prompted Nigerians to search for updates on the Super Eagles, the opening ceremony involving Burna Boy and Shakira, key fixtures and the eventual final.

“The World Cup over everything,” Google stated, stressing that “no story came close.”

January, however, was largely dominated by AFCON, particularly after Nigeria’s painful semi-final loss to Morocco following a penalty shootout.

“January belonged to AFCON, and to heartbreak,” Google said.

The search giant identified “Nigeria vs Morocco” as one of the biggest individual queries of the year, saying the trend reflected “a country going through the full arc: fixtures, hope, heartbreak, and ‘AFCON final’ anyway.”

The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics provided one of February’s unexpected search stories. Nigerians showed strong curiosity about the event, including ice hockey and other winter sports.

“Nigeria watched a Winter Olympics,” Google observed, adding: “Curiosity, it turns out, does not need snow.”

Global tensions involving Iran, Israel and the Strait of Hormuz also translated into significant search activity in Nigeria.

Queries including “Iran news,” “Israel Iran war” and “Strait of Hormuz meaning” recorded spikes as concerns grew over the impact of the tensions on international oil supplies and prices.

“Geopolitics rarely trends in the abstract,” Google said.

According to the company, Nigerians wanted to understand not just the conflict itself but how developments thousands of kilometres away could affect their lives at home.

“A war three thousand miles away was also a story about the cost of the ride to work,” Google said.

The Blord and VeryDarkMan saga was another major search phenomenon. Interest in the controversy remained high for months and peaked around Blord’s arrest and subsequent release on bail.

“‘Who is Blord’ ran alongside the main queries,” Google noted, describing the searches as “signs of new arrivals catching up on a drama already in its third act.”

Meanwhile, the enigmatic “67” meme became a notable internet trend, particularly among younger Nigerians.

“‘67’, the Gen Z meme, peaked in January, baffling every Nigerian over 25,” Google said.

The company said the expression was taken from a US rap song and adopted by teenagers, often alongside a hand gesture, despite having little or no definite meaning.

Google’s data also captured public interest in the deaths of several prominent personalities, including singer Destiny Boy, actor Alexx Ekubo and American actor Eric Dane.

“Three deaths cut through everything else,” Google said.

Destiny Boy’s death in January generated sustained searches, particularly following the homicide investigation and autopsy. Searches for Alexx Ekubo rose again in June during his burial in Arochukwu, while Eric Dane’s death also attracted significant attention.

Issues surrounding accountability, politics and legal battles were also among the stories Nigerians followed closely.

“Accountability stories drew steady traffic all period,” Google said, pointing to searches linked to former Minister of Power Saleh Mamman, the Mudashiru Obasa Lagos State House of Assembly speakership saga and documents released in connection with Jeffrey Epstein in the United States.

Celebrity controversies also remained firmly on the search radar.

The divorce controversy involving veteran broadcaster Frank Edoho and his former wife generated significant interest, while a road accident involving music promoter Sam Larry brought renewed attention to earlier public debates surrounding the late singer Mohbad.

“Celebrity headlines that would not sit still,” Google said.

Entertainment searches were equally prominent, with Nigerians tracking major music, film and international entertainment developments.

Among the leading entertainment-related searches were Wizkid and Asake’s “Jogodo”, the 2026 Grammy Awards, Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance, Mortal Kombat 2 and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, said the search figures provided a useful snapshot of what Nigerians cared about during the period.

“Search data is the most honest record of national attention we have, because nobody performs for a search bar,” Kola-Ogunlade said.

“Nigerians did not just watch these stories, they interrogated them: the shootout, the strait, the files, the meme.”

He added: “Seven months of data says the same thing every month. When something matters in this country, it trends on Search before it reaches the front page.”

Google explained that the rankings were calculated using each story’s peak monthly search interest in Nigeria from January through July 2026, with related searches grouped together.

Other notable searches included the 2026 Grammy Awards, the Epstein files, hantavirus and Saleh Mamman, among others.
