ABUJA — The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has condemned the alleged attack on its members at a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The opposition party described the incident as an unprovoked assault and accused suspected state-sponsored thugs of repeatedly targeting its members.

In a statement released late Sunday, NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, said the party had a constitutional right to hold peaceful meetings and participate in the democratic process.

“This incessant assault on our members by state-sponsored thugs must stop. As a registered political party, we have every constitutional right to participate in the democratic process through peaceful assembly. No amount of intimidation will silence this constitutionally guaranteed right,” the party said.

The NDC said the alleged attacks in Enugu and other parts of the South-East represented a threat to democracy and the constitutional right to freedom of association.

It also accused security agencies of complacency in dealing with attacks allegedly targeting opposition groups in Enugu and across the South-East.

The party cited an earlier incident in Imo State, where it said its members were allegedly attacked twice during a town hall meeting and consultation involving its senatorial candidate, Uche Onyeagocha.

The NDC also claimed that the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu was “jittery and disturbed” by the opposition party’s growing momentum.

It insisted, however, that the alleged violence would not deter its mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“If the goal of those sponsoring these thugs and attacks is to instill fear in the hearts of the people, they have failed woefully. This cowardly act will only strengthen our resolve to canvass and mobilise for the party and its candidates across the board,” the statement added.

The party urged security agencies to investigate the alleged attack comprehensively and ensure that those responsible, as well as their alleged sponsors, are brought to justice.

“The NDC will not be cowed. We will continue to organise, mobilise, and defend the democratic space,” it said.
