The All Progressives Congress (APC) has adjusted its primary election timetable, moving its presidential primary to May 23, 2026, while adopting a dual-mode system designed to balance consensus and direct voting.

The decision was announced by Deputy National Publicity Secretary Durosinmi Meseko following the party’s 186th National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja.

According to Meseko, the revised schedule supersedes a recently released timetable and has already been forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The updated calendar outlines key milestones, including the sale of nomination forms from April 25 to May 2 and submission by May 4. Screening of aspirants for legislative and governorship positions will take place between May 6 and 8, while presidential hopefuls will be screened on May 9.

Results are expected on May 11, with appeals set for May 12 and 13.

The party will then conduct its primaries in sequence, culminating in the presidential primary on May 23.

A major feature of the new plan is the adoption of both direct and consensus primary options. However, Meseko noted a critical condition: if any aspirant refuses to agree to a consensus arrangement, the process will automatically revert to direct primaries.

“Nomination forms for all aspirants… are open,” he said, dismissing speculation about restrictions on participation.

He also confirmed that the party has submitted its updated membership register to INEC, ensuring compliance with electoral requirements.

Additionally, the APC approved a separate timetable for ward, local government, and state congresses in Zamfara State, scheduled to run from April 28 to early May.

Meseko concluded that the party is “fully ready for the upcoming primary elections,” signalling preparations for a competitive nomination process.
