Augustine “Cerezo” Eguavoen has been handed the responsibility of leading Nigeria’s Super Falcons on an interim basis as the search for a permanent head coach continues.

The former Super Eagles manager will oversee the team’s crucial 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign, beginning with a second-round showdown against Comoros in October.

Eguavoen is no stranger to major international assignments, having guided the Super Eagles to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

He will work alongside a technical team that includes Christopher Danjuma, the head coach of Nasarawa Amazons. Danjuma recently led the Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf has been appointed as an assistant coach. Yusuf made 68 appearances for Nigeria and was part of the squad at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Experienced goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa is also part of the interim coaching team.

The Super Falcons, who have won the African women’s title 10 times, will meet Comoros after the latter secured qualification from the previous round with a huge 30-0 aggregate win over Sudan.

Nigeria will host both matches at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo. The first encounter is scheduled for October 9, 2026, while the second leg will take place four days later on October 13.

The route to Los Angeles is a demanding one, with Nigeria needing to negotiate four two-legged knockout rounds to claim one of Africa’s two Olympic qualification slots.

A victory over Comoros would send the Super Falcons into the third round in early 2027, where Morocco or the Democratic Republic of Congo could stand in their way.

Further knockout rounds are scheduled for late 2027, with heavyweight African opponents such as Cameroon, South Africa and Zambia potentially awaiting Nigeria in the decisive stages.
