Enzo Maresca says he is honoured to succeed Pep Guardiola as Manchester City manager, describing the opportunity as both a privilege and an exciting challenge.

The Italian, who previously managed Chelsea and Leicester City, was appointed City’s new head coach after Guardiola stepped down at the end of last season following an extraordinary 10-year spell that delivered 20 trophies.

Addressing reporters for the first time as City manager on Friday, Maresca praised Guardiola’s influence on modern football.

“First of all, I have to say that it’s a privilege,” he said.

“I’ve said many times that I consider Pep probably the best coach in the world in the last 20, 25 years. But again, it’s a challenge. It’s nice. It’s a privilege.”

Maresca acknowledged the difficulty of replacing a highly successful manager, noting that several clubs have found it difficult to sustain success after the departure of iconic figures. Manchester United’s struggles after Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 remain a notable example.

However, the 46-year-old believes Manchester City’s long-term planning and organisational stability provide a strong foundation for continued success.

“I think the organisation is the main thing,” Maresca said. “They (City) had three managers in 17 years. This is not normal, it doesn’t happen often.

“So this is probably one of the things that I’m confident that we can do a great job.”
