The Central Bank of Nigeria has raised fresh concerns over a growing wave of cyber fraud, warning Nigerians to be cautious of deceptive messages targeting their bank accounts.

In a statement released Wednesday, the bank’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, said fraudsters are using emails, text messages and online platforms to trick individuals into revealing sensitive financial information.

The CBN explained that such messages often appear legitimate, urging recipients to click links or follow instructions that ultimately compromise their accounts.

“These fraudulent messages… peddle false information about the Bank’s leadership, licensing, and policy issues, [and] are intended to hack personal accounts,” the statement said.

The apex bank urged Nigerians to rely only on its official website, www.cbn.gov.ng, and to verify any communication before taking action.

It warned against sharing personal or financial details on suspicious platforms, noting that doing so could lead to financial loss through cyber fraud.

The CBN also called on the public to report suspicious communications to the appropriate authorities.

As part of its response, the bank said it is working with security agencies to strengthen cybersecurity measures and protect citizens from rising digital threats.
