Senator Seriake Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking during a world press conference, Dickson said his decision was driven by principle and concern over the worsening situation within the PDP.

He described the party’s condition as critical.

“The PDP is sick and presently in the ICU,” Dickson said.

The senator warned against the emergence of a one-party system in Nigeria, stressing that the country requires a vibrant opposition to safeguard democracy.

Dickson also expressed disappointment with what he called the deteriorating state of the PDP, noting that internal actions by some leaders had weakened the party.

He accused several PDP governors of aligning with the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move he said had further damaged the party’s credibility as an opposition force.

According to him, these developments led him to seek a new political platform, prompting his move to the NDC.

After his defection, Dickson was officially welcomed by the leadership of the NDC, presented with the party’s flag and issued a membership card numbered “001”.
