The House of Representatives committee probing the alleged activities of a fake presidential agency has ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to produce Mr Adeyemi Martin, who allegedly posed as the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), before lawmakers on Wednesday at noon.

The committee issued the directive after the Nigeria Police Force confirmed details of its criminal investigation into allegations that Adeyemi falsely represented himself as the head of the purported Presidential Economic Advisory Council and the PFIPC.

Committee Chairman Rep. Yusuf Gagdi said the suspect’s appearance had become essential given the potential impact of the case on government institutions and the individuals named in the investigation.

“This committee clearly needs the suspected DG to appear before this committee,” Gagdi said.

“People’s names are involved. People’s integrity is involved. Institutional names are involved. Institutional integrity is involved.”

He added: “It is not an option now. We will need him here to confirm some documents to us in such a way that will not undermine our investigation to enable us to submit our report on time.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Basir Abdullahi, representing the IGP, told the committee that the police had already arraigned Adeyemi before the Federal High Court on an eight-count charge while investigations continue.

“The Nigerian Police Force investigated part of this case late last year and filed eight-count charges before a Federal High Court. The case is ongoing,” he said.

Abdullahi cautioned against discussing details that could affect ongoing investigations or judicial proceedings.

“We don’t want to say things that are under investigation. It is definitely going to prejudice the ongoing investigation and make people have opinions that may prejudge the outcome of an investigation or judicial decision,” he stated.

Police further confirmed receiving petitions alleging that Adeyemi used the alleged office to obtain accommodation at the Federal Secretariat, sought approval to recruit about 300 staff, attempted to insert about $1.3 billion into the 2026 budget for the purported agency and planned a World Investment Summit.

The hearing also focused on suspected forged documents. After comparing signatures on documents attributed to the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President with verified official correspondence, the police witness concluded: “They are not the same.”

Lawmakers disclosed that investigators have so far uncovered about 29 allegedly forged documents involving several government institutions, many of which have already denied issuing the documents.

The committee maintained that it would avoid interfering with ongoing police investigations while completing its own inquiry, which could lead to further recommendations for law enforcement agencies.
