If You Can’t Say It to My Face, Don’t Say It at All -By Daniel Othegbemeh

Gossip does not survive because people speak; it survives because people listen. Every conversation has an audience. Those who eagerly listen, laugh or add their own criticism become part of the problem. If someone feels comfortable discussing another person’s flaws with you today, what makes you think they will not discuss yours tomorrow? Trust is difficult to earn but remarkably easy to lose.

There is an old saying that words are powerful. They can encourage, heal and inspire, but they can also destroy trust, damage reputations and leave wounds that are difficult to heal. That is why I have come to believe that gossip is one of the most harmful habits we have normalized in our society.

One thing I have never understood is why some people find satisfaction in speaking negatively about others behind their backs while pretending to be friendly whenever they meet them. They smile at you, greet you warmly, ask for your help and even engage in pleasant conversations. Yet, the moment you are absent, your name becomes the topic of criticism. To me, that is not honesty; it is hypocrisy.

In my experience, gossip often reveals more about the person spreading it than the person being discussed. I sometimes wonder if it stems from insecurity or the need for approval. Some people seem to believe that criticizing someone else will make them more accepted or more interesting in the eyes of those listening. Sadly, relationships built on tearing others down can never be built on genuine trust.

What troubles me most is how quickly people forget the good someone has done. A person may have shown kindness, honesty and generosity on countless occasions, but one mistake suddenly becomes the only thing people remember. It is as though ninety-nine good deeds are erased by one bad moment. None of us is perfect, yet many of us are unwilling to extend the same grace we hope to receive when we make mistakes.

Gossip does not survive because people speak; it survives because people listen. Every conversation has an audience. Those who eagerly listen, laugh or add their own criticism become part of the problem. I have always believed in a simple principle: if you have something important to say about someone, have the courage to say it respectfully to them. If it is not worth saying to their face, perhaps it is not worth saying behind their back either. This is not to say that people should never report wrongdoing or seek advice about serious concerns. There is a difference between addressing a genuine issue and spreading stories simply to damage another person’s reputation.

Behind every piece of gossip is a human being whose name and reputation may be affected in ways we do not immediately see. A careless rumour can destroy friendships, create unnecessary conflict and shape how others view a person without giving them the opportunity to defend themselves. At the same time, the person who constantly gossips also loses something valuable the trust of those around them. After all, if you are willing to speak about others behind their backs, people will naturally wonder what you say about them when they are absent.

Imagine how different our schools, workplaces, families and communities would be if we spent more time encouraging people than discussing their weaknesses. Imagine if honesty replaced hypocrisy, and respect replaced rumours. We would build relationships founded on trust rather than suspicion.

Before speaking about someone who is not present, pause and ask yourself a simple question: Would I be comfortable saying these same words if they were standing right in front of me? If the answer is no, then perhaps those words should never be spoken. Protecting another person’s reputation says far more about your character than exposing their flaws ever will. If we truly desire a society built on trust, then we must stop celebrating gossip and start practising honesty. Sometimes, the strongest statement we can make is choosing not to speak at all.
