Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission on Wednesday visited the National Secretariat of the Labour Party as part of a verification exercise.

Led by Mansur Hassan, the team is reviewing claims made by the party regarding its executive members, organisational structure, membership database, and ownership or tenancy of its headquarters.

Explaining the mission, Hassan said:
“We are INEC monitors, we are not observers. We are here to monitor and correct things, not observe.”

He noted that the exercise would include checking the National Working Committee composition and reviewing documentation:
“We want to have a look at evidence of the tenancy of this place… We will sight the document and have a copy of it. We will also like to have a soft copy of the party’s membership register.”

The team also plans to assess staffing at the secretariat and split into groups to verify operations within the party.

Welcoming the delegation, interim National Chairman Nenadi Usman assured them of full cooperation, stating that the party leadership remains intact and prepared.

She used the opportunity to urge unity among members, particularly those who had been aggrieved during the party’s recent internal crisis:
“For us to do that we need to bring everybody on board… All those who are aggrieved should please come back, let’s work together.”

Usman emphasized that leadership changes are temporary but the party endures:
“Leadership will come and go… the party will remain.”

She concluded by handing over relevant documents to the INEC team and accompanying them on an inspection of the secretariat’s offices and facilities.
