Peter Obi has renewed his call for a shift in national priorities, urging governments to invest more in education rather than focusing predominantly on physical infrastructure.

Speaking at the Fourth Public Lecture of Coal City University in Enugu, the ADC presidential aspirant warned that neglecting education is slowing Nigeria’s development.

“You cannot continue building physical infrastructure without building human infrastructure,” he said, emphasising that education remains the backbone of leadership, innovation, and productivity.

Drawing comparisons with countries like China and India, Obi noted that sustained investment in human capital has been central to their economic transformation.

He highlighted Nigeria’s struggles across Human Development Index indicators such as literacy, life expectancy, and income levels, linking them to insufficient investment in education and healthcare.

Obi also expressed concern about the growing number of out-of-school children, describing it as a major obstacle to economic growth.

He called for increased funding for schools and stronger partnerships between government and private sector players to improve access and quality.

Former Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo, who chaired the event, challenged the claim that “education is a scam,” saying the problem lies in policy inconsistency and lack of practical mentorship.

He stressed the need for continuity in education reforms and support systems that prepare students for the workforce.

In his remarks, Vice Chancellor Afam Itcha-Ituma said the lecture series is designed to foster knowledge exchange and expose students to ideas that can drive societal development.
