Okpebholo’s Gaffe Does Not Define His Leadership: A Plea For Understanding, by Isaac Asabor

Monday Okpebholo

Governance, like every other aspect of human endeavor, is a complex tapestry of decisions, actions, and outcomes. It is not immune to human imperfections. This reality was brought to the fore during the recent presentation of the 2025 budget by the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to the State House of Assembly. The faux pas which characterized the delivery of the numerical values in the budget has sparked reactions across various quarters. However, it is essential to reflect on this moment with perspective and to judge Governor Okpebholo not by this single event but by his overarching commitment to the progress of Edo State.

Since his inauguration last month, Governor Okpebholo has consistently demonstrated a readiness to work for the betterment of Edo State. His administration has focused on critical areas such as education, infrastructure, healthcare, and economic revitalization. His recent inspection tour of public schools is a testament to his hands-on approach. He did not shy away from confronting the stark realities of dilapidated classrooms, poor sanitary facilities, and subpar learning conditions. Instead, he promised to address these issues head-on, signaling a shift from mere rhetoric to actionable reforms. His disappointment during the tour was not just that of a leader; it was that of a father who envisions a better future for the next generation.

In fact, the 2025 Appropriation Bill, aptly titled the “Budget of Renewed Hope for a Rising Edo,” reflects Governor Okpebholo’s visionary approach to governance. With an estimated expenditure of N605 billion, representing a significant 25% increase from the previous year, this budget underscores the administration’s commitment to accelerating growth and development. The budget prioritizes investments in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, road infrastructure, and job creation. If implemented effectively, it has the potential to transform Edo State into an economic hub that offers opportunities for its residents and serves as a model for other states.

Critics have seized upon the governor’s verbal misstep during the budget presentation as evidence of incompetence. However, it is crucial to remember that governance is not a performance of oratory but a commitment to impactful leadership. History offers numerous examples of leaders who were not silver-tongued speakers yet left behind legacies that transformed their societies. For instance, Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States, was known for his quiet demeanor and lack of rhetorical flair but was lauded for his humanitarian efforts. Governor Okpebholo has displayed similar qualities of humility and determination, qualities that are far more valuable than a flawless delivery of budget figures.

Moreover, Okpebholo’s hands-on governance style and commitment to accountability have earned him accolades even from his detractors. His inspection tours are not just photo opportunities; they are working visits aimed at understanding and solving the challenges faced by ordinary Edolites. His administration has rolled out initiatives to empower youths, support small businesses, and improve public services, all of which are steps towards building a sustainable future for Edo State.

To my fellow Edolites and Nigerians, I plead for understanding and patience. Leadership is a marathon, not a sprint, and every leader needs the support of their people to succeed. A single moment of imperfection does not negate the broader narrative of a leader striving to make a difference. Let us not allow a gaffe to overshadow the governor’s strides and efforts to address the real issues plaguing our state. Instead, let us hold him accountable constructively, supporting him as he works towards the collective aspiration of a prosperous Edo State.

As citizens, our responsibility does not end at criticizing our leaders. Constructive criticism, while necessary, must be paired with active participation in governance. We must engage with the policies and programs of the government, offer feedback, and suggest alternatives where necessary. By doing so, we create a collaborative environment that fosters growth and development.

Governor Okpebholo’s actions speak louder than his stumble with words. His resolve to address the challenges facing Edo State demonstrates that he is a leader willing to learn, adapt, and grow. While he may not be the most eloquent speaker, he has shown that he is a doer, a trait that is far more valuable in governance.

In conclusion, leadership is about growth, resilience, and action. Governor Okpebholo has shown these qualities, and it is our collective responsibility to nurture them for the good of Edo State. Let us judge him by his deeds, the tangible impact of his policies, and the legacy he builds for our children, not by an isolated moment that does not define his governance. The journey to a better Edo State is one we must all embark on together, with a focus on progress rather than perfection.

Governor Monday Okpebholo’s communication style may not be flawless, but it is important to separate this from his competence as a leader. Eloquence is a valuable skill, but it is not the measure of a governor’s effectiveness. His unwavering dedication to Edo State and his determination to serve its people are what truly matter. Leadership requires vision, commitment, and the ability to make decisions that prioritize the welfare of the populace, qualities Governor Okpebholo has consistently demonstrated. His actions and policies reflect a deep understanding of the challenges facing the state and a genuine resolve to address them.

The essence of leadership lies in results, not rhetoric. Governor Okpebholo’s love for Edo State shines through in his proactive efforts to improve infrastructure, create jobs, and foster economic growth. He has consistently shown that he values substance over style, channeling his energy into tangible outcomes that uplift communities. His readiness to roll up his sleeves and work tirelessly for the betterment of Edo State is a testament to his character. While polished speeches may inspire in the short term, it is sustained, impactful action that transforms lives, and Governor Okpebholo has proven himself in this regard.

Ultimately, what matters is that Governor Okpebholo has the heart and capacity to lead Edo State toward greater heights. His commitment to the people and his readiness to address their needs outweigh any concerns about how he expresses himself. Edo State needs a leader who is grounded, hardworking, and deeply invested in its success. Governor Okpebholo embodies these traits, making him an exemplary steward for the state’s future.
