Cristiano Ronaldo says he is optimistic about Portugal’s chances at the World Cup, insisting the team is ready to compete after an intensive period of preparation.

The Portugal captain made the remarks on Friday as the national team departed Lisbon for its World Cup base camp in Palm Beach, Florida.

“We’re approaching this competition with a lot of hope,” the veteran forward said.

Ronaldo revealed that the squad had undergone rigorous preparations but believes the hard work will pay off once the tournament begins.

“The preparation has been very good, tiring, because we have worked hard,” he said, while assuring supporters that he remains “physically good.”

Looking ahead to the competition, Ronaldo expressed confidence in both the team and its prospects.

“I am very positive, I believe things will go well and that we will put in a good performance,” he said.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also hailed the quality of the current Portuguese squad.

“It’s a very good generation… which will bring a lot of joy to the Portuguese people,” Ronaldo added.

Portugal are scheduled to face the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K, with Ronaldo emphasising the need to focus on one game at a time.

“The most important thing is to start well, with the first match, then follow up with the second and third… finish top of the group and from there, take it one match at a time,” he said.

At 41, Ronaldo is preparing for a record sixth World Cup appearance. While some observers have questioned whether his continued presence could affect the development of Portugal’s younger stars, the team arrives at the tournament in good form after defeating Chile and Nigeria 2-1 in recent warm-up matches.

Portugal will be aiming to surpass previous World Cup achievements, having finished third in 1966 and reached the quarter-finals in Qatar four years ago.
