Sowore’s Baseless Outbursts Cannot Rewrite the Truth About IGP Egbetokun’s Professional Legacy -By Adewole Kehinde
IGP Egbetokun’s agenda for the Nigeria Police Force is clear, ambitious and transformational: to develop a professionally competent, service-driven, rule-of-law-compliant, and people-friendly police institution, anchored on intelligence-led policing, technology, improved welfare, inter-agency cooperation, and a modern approach to crime control.
In response to Hamza Nuhu Dantani’s post on Facebook, Omoyele Sowore has once again chosen to launch personal and unfounded attacks, this time describing the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, as “illegal”, even alleging that he “lives and breathes illegality”.
Sadly, rather than engaging with issues on facts, Sowore has chosen to take the path of bitterness and sensationalism. But his claims collapse under the weight of truth.
First, let us be clear: Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was constitutionally and legally appointed. His appointment followed due procedure and has never been nullified by any competent authority. Describing him as “illegal” is simply a reckless personal view without any legal foundation.
Beyond legalities, it is evident that IGP Egbetokun has remained one of the most professional and reform-driven leaders ever to occupy that office.
His approach to policing has been methodical, knowledge-based, and grounded in service to the Nigerian people. Claims suggesting otherwise are nothing more than attempts to distract from his ongoing reforms.
Sowore’s allegation that IGP Egbetokun has “turned even the physical office entrusted to him into a venue for unlawful acts” is not only baseless but also a deeply irresponsible statement.
It is unimaginable that a police chief of his sophistication, training, and long-standing commitment to ethics would engage in such conduct. Nothing in his decades of service supports such a narrative.
Let it be emphasised: IGP Egbetokun has never displayed disregard for the law, contrary to the malicious assertions being circulated online.
In fact, his record stands strong in terms of respect for the rule of law, protection of human rights, and guaranteeing freedom of association and expression.
These are verifiable both in policing directives issued under his watch and in engagements with civil society and the media.
IGP Egbetokun’s agenda for the Nigeria Police Force is clear, ambitious and transformational: to develop a professionally competent, service-driven, rule-of-law-compliant, and people-friendly police institution, anchored on intelligence-led policing, technology, improved welfare, inter-agency cooperation, and a modern approach to crime control.
No amount of blackmail, misinformation, or sensational commentary will derail that mission. Nigerians deserve security, professionalism, and a police institution that embodies justice and hope, and this is exactly what IGP Egbetokun is shaping.
