A wave of global reactions has followed a shooting scare at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, with leaders condemning the act and welcoming the safety of former President Donald Trump and other attendees.

The incident unfolded at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night when gunshots were heard from the hotel lobby, forcing the evacuation of Trump, First Lady Melania, cabinet members, and journalists.

Authorities confirmed the arrest of Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from California, who was allegedly armed with firearms and knives. He is expected to face federal charges, including weapons and assault offences.

According to investigators, the suspect had planned to target the president and top officials. Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser said the attacker confronted Secret Service agents in the lobby and may have been staying at the hotel.

US Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that the suspect is facing two felony counts, with further charges anticipated.

Reports also revealed that the suspect authored a manifesto outlining his motives and criticising security arrangements at the event.

The incident drew swift international condemnation.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said any attack on democratic institutions must be condemned, adding: “It is a huge relief that the president, the first lady and all those attending are safe.”

French President Emmanuel Macron described the attack as “unacceptable,” while Canada’s Mark Carney reiterated that “political violence has no place in any democracy.”

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “relieved” the president and others were unharmed, echoing similar sentiments expressed by leaders including Ursula von der Leyen and Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
