VDM: Let’s Give Credit Where It’s Due –By Matthew Ma

It is now essential for those who participate in discussions—often rife with talk yet lacking sufficient action—to rise to the occasion and fulfill their responsibilities. The complexities of their stories will unfold with time, revealing the profound challenges they face in a society that often struggles to provide the support they need. We must remember that this is Nigeria, where circumstances can change your destiny, and life can present unexpected difficulties and opportunities. Therefore, while we come together to celebrate their safe return, it is paramount that we actively participate in shaping a constructive and hopeful future for them. Our engagement must go beyond mere celebration; it should involve tangible actions that empower these girls, advocate for their rights, and foster an environment where they can rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience.

“Again, we must not forget to acknowledge the vital contributions of VDM (VeryDarkMan) and Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, in the triumphant return of trafficked Nigerian girls from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Recently, VDM raised public awareness about the troubling situation of young Nigerian women alleged to have been trafficked and held under exploitative conditions. His impactful videos and advocacy efforts garnered attention from both government bodies and private sectors, greatly expediting the efforts to rescue and repatriate the girls.”

Nigerians have a rich history of social crusaders who have fearlessly fought for justice and equality, with roots tracing back to influential figures such as Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the groundbreaking pioneer of Afrobeat music; his younger brother, Dr. Beko Ransome Kuti, a prominent advocate for healthcare and human rights; and the celebrated legal stalwart Gani Fawehinmi, known for his relentless activism against government corruption and oppression. Though these notable individuals have passed on, their legacies continue to inspire those who challenge the status quo to pursue social change for marginalized communities nationwide. In the present day, a new voice has stepped onto the scene, captivating the attention of the Nigerian populace and reviving the spirit of activism in a contemporary context. This figure is not a musician or a lawyer like his predecessors but instead leverages the dynamic power of social media. His name is Martins Otse, better known by his moniker, VeryDarkMan (VDM). This nickname reflects not only his striking physical presence—standing tall with a well-muscled bodybuilder’s physique—but also his deeply melanated skin, which serves as a marker of pride and cultural identity. VeryDarkMan utilizes various social media channels to address pressing societal issues, raise awareness, and mobilize support for the marginalized. His compelling blend of charisma, humor, and a keen understanding of the complexities of Nigerian society makes his messages resonate deeply with the youth, who are eager for change. Amidst a landscape defined by economic challenges and political unrest, VDM emerges as a beacon of hope, echoing the aspirations of those who came before him while navigating the digital age’s vast and transformative opportunities for social activism.

I often find myself quite taken aback when I encounter someone who confidently dismisses the actions and far-reaching impact of VeryDarkMan (VDM). While it is reasonable for individuals to form their own opinions about him—whether they admire his work or hold a more critical view—it feels unjust to overlook or diminish the significance of his contributions. VDM has made a considerable mark in various areas, and acknowledging this complexity in his character is essential for a balanced viewpoint. His influence, regardless of one’s personal feelings, deserves recognition rather than dismissal. For instance, over the years, VDM has emerged as a unique social crusader in the national consciousness. Unlike figures such as Fela, Fawhehinmi, and Beko, his focus extends beyond the government and its appointees to include anyone in a position of privilege who seeks to exploit their status to violate the rights of others, particularly those at the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum. Notably, this scrutiny also applies to individuals of his own age and social class, including friends. It is a curious paradox that VDM is not a lawyer who would typically engage the legal system to seek justice for the oppressed. Instead, he operates through an unorthodox system of justice that delivers results in mere hours—much quicker than traditional court proceedings. This efficiency is why he is increasingly regarded as the last hope for the commoner. Victims of injustice and oppression now often turn to him for resolution rather than seeking help from the security agencies, who usually encounter a frustrating and protracted process that requires financial expenditure without yielding any results.

The rise of VDM as a notable social advocate began in 2022 when a woman who had purchased a product from Jenny’s Glow, a skincare manufacturer, publicly criticized the company for the damage its product inflicted on her skin. VDM intervened, taking the company’s side and broadening the discussion to include manufacturers that sell products lacking NAFDAC registration. While VDM’s social media posts raised concerns about significant national issues, including those relating to defamation, they successfully achieved his primary objective: compelling Bobrisky to repay a loan of N4 million that he had taken from an anonymous individual during his jail term, which he had allegedly refused to refund. Whether intentional or not, this action established VDM as a highly reliable and effective debt collector, positioning him as a go-to figure for those facing difficulties in recovering owed debts. However, VDM’s role in the skincare controversy was minor compared to the outrage he caused in September 2024. He published a video on social media featuring a voice note in which crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, discussed with a creditor how he had spent his six-month jail sentence outside of prison by allegedly bribing officials from the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The post captured national attention due to the mention of a prominent human rights lawyer and his son. Most crucially, it shed light on an issue that had long been rumored: that influential individuals pay bribes to avoid serving prison sentences for offenses they have committed.

It is straightforward to reach out to him with the necessary evidence, such as documents, recorded phone conversations, text messages, and WhatsApp exchanges. With these facts, VDM would contact the individual refusing to settle a debt, presenting an ultimatum (typically within 24 hours) to either refund the money or face exposure on social media for unsavory reasons. This threat would extend beyond the debtor to include their family, friends, and associates. Available evidence demonstrates that this approach is often more effective than the legal system, as those involved typically settle the debt before the deadline to avoid reputational damage online. One case involved a spiritual practitioner who allegedly collected N2 million from a client to prepare a good luck charm but failed to deliver. Not only did he neglect the service for which he was paid, but he also threatened to have the client arrested for supposedly threatening his life. The situation shifted when the client warned the native doctor of the potential repercussions of contacting VDM if he did not refund the money. To avert such an outcome, and fully aware of the implications of being publicly called out by the “online detective,” the native doctor refunded the initial amount along with an extra N500,000.

Ubi Franklin, a former Big Brother Africa winner and well-known social media influencer, has faced repercussions from VDM for refusing to refund N10 million he allegedly received from a friend for a failed business venture. After VDM issued a 24-hour ultimatum for Franklin to return the funds or risk exposing his misdeeds publicly, he complied by sending N3 million before the deadline and promised to pay the remaining balance. VDM’s concerns extend beyond financial matters; he also addresses social issues. For example, following a report that the wife of a senator from Taraba State had a skit maker arrested for allegedly insulting her husband by portraying a dilapidated road in his constituency—which he has neglected despite receiving substantial funding for constituency projects—VDM instructed the woman to ensure the skit maker’s release within 24 hours. Otherwise, she would face significant backlash on social media that would likely be uncomfortable for her, her husband, and their family and friends.

A female university student sought assistance from VDM after her boyfriend published her nude videos on social media in an attempt to force her to refund the N30,000 he had borrowed and subsequently refused to repay. In response, the social crusader released a video, giving the estranged boyfriend 24 hours to delete the footage, threatening that failure to do so would result in police action for cyberbullying. Another aspect of VDM that has rapidly gained my admiration is his unwavering commitment to charitable efforts. Unlike many influencers motivated by financial gain, he established a non-governmental organization to raise funds for his charity work, focusing primarily on equipping public schools and providing underprivileged children access to quality education. The funds raised aimed not only to improve public schools with modern teaching resources but also to encourage the active participation of National Youth Service Corps members in those institutions. The public’s support for him is clear. Within just 24 hours of announcing the launch of his NGO, Nigerians from around the world contributed over N75 million, with donations starting as low as N100. By the end of the fundraising campaign, the total amount raised exceeded N265 million. He provided real-time updates on the funds received to ensure transparency and accountability. Furthermore, he challenged celebrities who ask for public donations for charitable causes to disclose both the total amounts raised and how those funds are utilized.

VDM has reportedly taken the initiative to renovate deteriorating public schools, restoring conducive learning environments for underprivileged children. These renovations typically involve repairing classrooms and roofs, providing desks and chairs, delivering educational materials, repainting, and upgrading overall infrastructure. Such efforts significantly enhance morale for both students and teachers, particularly in underserved areas. In communities grappling with a scarcity of clean water, VDM has financed and overseen the installation of boreholes, facilitating residents’ access to safe drinking water. This intervention addresses waterborne diseases, alleviates the burdens of walking long distances to collect water, and mitigates sanitation and hygiene issues. VDM’s actions exemplify how influential individuals can translate advocacy into meaningful impact, confronting systemic neglect through direct intervention. His work underscores the importance of civic responsibility and social justice in Nigeria.

Again, we must not forget to acknowledge the vital contributions of VDM (VeryDarkMan) and Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace, in the triumphant return of trafficked Nigerian girls from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Recently, VDM raised public awareness about the troubling situation of young Nigerian women alleged to have been trafficked and held under exploitative conditions. His impactful videos and advocacy efforts garnered attention from both government bodies and private sectors, greatly expediting the efforts to rescue and repatriate the girls. Following his release from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), VDM promptly traveled to Lagos. His intention was to personally greet and support the group of Nigerian girls who had recently been rescued and returned from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This swift action not only underscores his dedication to advocating for justice but also reinforces his profound commitment to humanitarian efforts to assist vulnerable populations. In parallel, Allen Onyema demonstrated remarkable responsiveness by offering an Air Peace aircraft at no cost to facilitate the girls’ return. His long-standing humanitarian efforts — from aiding stranded Nigerians in conflict zones to supporting initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic — reflect his unwavering commitment to national and humanitarian service. The successful airlift represents a powerful partnership between civic advocacy and private initiative. This rescue mission is a poignant reminder of what can be achieved when compassionate leadership and strong civic voices unite to protect the vulnerable.

VDM’s resilience is remarkable, especially in light of his recent release from detention. Instead of taking a much-deserved break to recuperate from the harsh realities he faced, he immediately redirected his focus towards the well-being of those who were still suffering around him. This decision not only showcases his selfless character but also emphasizes his unwavering commitment to championing the rights of those often marginalized and in need of support. His actions convey a powerful message about his integrity and resilience. By returning to his advocacy work so quickly after such a challenging experience, VDM underscores his commitment as a passionate and dedicated advocate for change. He doesn’t just speak of compassion; he exemplifies it through tireless efforts to uplift others. Additionally, VDM is an inspiring example of how one can remain steadfast in pursuing a more just world, even in the face of personal adversity. It’s intriguing and admirable to consider the nature of a person like VDM, who chooses to channel his energy, resources, and passion into helping others despite grappling with his own struggles. His choice illustrates not just resilience but also a profound understanding of the interconnectedness of human experiences, motivating me to consider how I can contribute to positive change.

One significant advantage VDM possesses is the credibility and integrity he has cultivated through his endeavors. He refrains from engaging in any issues unless he has personally conducted thorough investigations to ascertain their accuracy. Therefore, he asserts that while anyone is free to express any opinion about him or label him as they wish, no one can challenge the truthfulness or precision of his statements regarding any given matter. It genuinely baffles me to observe the harsh criticism some Nigerians directed at VDM (VeryDarkMan), especially when the reasons for such animosity seem unfounded. Even if you don’t personally resonate with his style or message, it’s essential to acknowledge his considerable positive influence on many people’s lives across Nigeria. VDM has dedicated substantial time and effort to raising awareness about various societal issues and often champions the voices of those who might otherwise go unheard. This significant contribution to the community and his willingness to take a stand for others should not be overshadowed by a single negative opinion or incident. His track record reflects a commitment to uplift and empower, which deserves recognition and respect rather than unwarranted disdain.

In a country where integrity is scarce, VDM emerges as a refreshing presence and a source of inspiration for Nigerians, especially the younger generation that has lost hope. He has embraced the role of a social crusader, an online vigilante dedicated to harnessing the power of social media to tackle the injustices and issues that impede Nigeria’s progress. For those in authority and positions of influence, he is seen as a threat and a nuisance to be contained. In contrast, those suffering from injustice or oppression view him as a savior. VDM frequently mocks his critics, asserting they cannot undermine him because he has never aspired to their lofty ambitions. He shows little interest in climbing the socioeconomic ladder or acquiring material wealth. Nevertheless, even without actively seeking riches, VDM finds himself thriving on the public goodwill he increasingly attracts.

Let us take a moment to acknowledge and celebrate the significant contributions of VDM and Allen Onyema. Their unwavering dedication and hard work have made a profound impact not only on their immediate projects but also on the broader community. Recognizing and appreciating their efforts is crucial, as it serves not merely as a courteous gesture but as an essential reminder of the value of commitment and perseverance. The innovations and positive changes they have instigated deserve our gratitude and recognition, inspiring others to aspire for excellence and to engage meaningfully with our society. By giving credit where it’s due, we establish a culture that values diligence and commitment and motivates others to pursue their own paths toward excellence. Let us take a moment to wholeheartedly acknowledge and celebrate the remarkable contributions of VDM and Allen Onyema, both of whom truly deserve our admiration and respect. Recognizing their achievements at this juncture not only honors their dedication but also possesses the profound potential to inspire others within our community and beyond. By illuminating their commitment and perseverance, we create a ripple effect that encourages individuals to reflect on their own efforts and aspire to similar levels of dedication and excellence in their endeavors. By honoring VDM and Onyema, we convey a powerful message: that the commitment of individuals can result in significant progress within society. This acknowledgment will motivate others, encouraging them to make positive contributions toward our collective aspirations and shared goals. It reminds us that by celebrating each other’s achievements, we not only strengthen the bonds within our community but also foster a spirit of collaboration.

Let us take a moment to genuinely celebrate the outstanding achievements enabled by the steadfast dedication and tireless efforts of VDM and Onyema. Their commitment and hard work have undeniably made a significant impact. As we warmly welcome these young girls who have endured unimaginable hardships, I grapple with several important questions that linger in my mind. What experiences have shaped their journeys, and what challenges will they face on their path to healing and reintegration? What obstacles and opportunities lie ahead as they aim to reintegrate into society following their traumatic experiences? Who among us will take on the crucial responsibility of ensuring that their difficulties do not determine their future paths? Who will offer the guidance and support they need to navigate the complexities of reintegration? What specific initiatives can we implement to aid their rehabilitation through counseling services, mentorship programs, or community support groups? Will they have access to meaningful educational and employment opportunities upon their return? How can we create pathways for them to engage in productive work that provides a sense of purpose and belonging? Ultimately, will the community embrace them with open arms, or will a lingering stigma surround their past experiences?
