2027 Election: I Won 12 States Without a Governor, Tinubu Having 36 Means Nothing — Peter Obi

Former Anambra governor Peter Obi says governors do not decide elections, claiming his 2023 performance proves voters—not political endorsements—determine outcomes.

Former Anambra State governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has dismissed concerns over the growing number of governors aligning with President Bola Tinubu, saying governors alone cannot determine the outcome of elections.

Obi made the remarks during an interview with NoireTV, where he argued that his showing in the 2023 presidential election demonstrated the limited influence of governors at the polls.

“It doesn’t matter whether 36 governors are with the president. I didn’t have one governor in the last election, and I won 12 states,” he said.

The NDC presidential candidate maintained that he was denied victories in two states during the 2023 election.

“Even after they have stolen two from me, I won 12 states.

“Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso won one state, Kano. APC, PDP and Labour all won 12 states each. And in it, I lost two by the process of rigging. So, I would have had 14.”

Obi’s allegations of electoral manipulation were previously challenged in court, with the Supreme Court ultimately affirming the election results.

Looking ahead to 2027, Obi said the focus should be on addressing poverty and improving living conditions rather than building political coalitions among elite power brokers.

“What is important, and what this election is going to be all about, is how to make Nigeria work for the poor,” he stated.

“A Nigeria where tribe, ethnicity and religion will not be the issue. The issue will be about the welfare of the people, the education of the people and the health of the people.”

Meanwhile, Obi has reiterated his commitment to resolving Nigeria’s deepening divisions through dialogue rather than confrontation.

In a statement released by the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), the former governor said he would engage agitators across the country and seek common ground to strengthen national unity.

“To achieve the aim of unifying the country, I will listen to all agitators, harmonise them and make some sacrifices with a view to bringing the country together,” he said.

According to POMR, Obi believes many of the country’s agitations are fueled by economic hardship, unemployment, perceived injustice and exclusion from political and economic opportunities.

The media office argued that sustainable peace cannot be achieved through force alone, insisting that genuine unity must be built through dialogue, fairness and responsive governance as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
