2027 Southern Borno Senate Race: Pressure Builds to Replace Ndume

Groups in Southern Borno oppose and support rival Senate aspirants as pressure mounts on Ndume ahead of 2027.

Senator Ali Ndume

Political activities ahead of the 2027 elections have intensified in Southern Borno as groups push for a possible change in representation of Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume.

The Voice of Savannah Community Association (VSCA) on Wednesday rejected what it called attempts by certain APC stakeholders to impose leadership decisions on the district.

Led by Comrade Ibrahim Ezekiel Mamza, the group faulted endorsements of Borno Assembly Deputy Speaker Abdullahi Askira for the Senate race.

It accused some stakeholders, including Sule Gambo, Dr. Hauwa Mai Musa, and Tafu Malla, of backing a candidate allegedly opposed to the creation of Savannah State.

Mamza said communities across Southern Borno’s 101 wards and nine LGAs oppose such political moves, insisting:

Demand for Apology and Criticism of Aspirant

The group demanded a public apology from Askira and his supporters, describing the Savannah State issue as a sensitive regional concern.

It also questioned his developmental record, claiming a lack of visible constituency projects and inadequate response to insecurity challenges.

The VSCA maintained that Senate representation is not the preserve of any single area, stressing that past elections have always involved open competition.

Security-Era Questions and Rotation Argument

The Voice of Displaced Communities of Southern Borno (VDCSB), led by Dr. Bashir Habu, also criticised Askira’s wartime role, asking what he did during Boko Haram attacks.

It asked:

“Where was Hon. Askira when our communities were under siege?”

At the same time, advocates of rotation argued for fairness, saying no locality should monopolise the Senate seat.

Sule Gambo said past arrangements supported rotation, but claimed the seat has remained in one area for nearly 20 years, sidelining others such as Chibok, Damboa, and Askira/Uba.

Supporters of Askira, however, praised his contributions to agriculture and job creation, while insisting he remains a strong contender.

Although Senator Ndume remains politically influential, rising mobilisation suggests a potentially heated contest in 2027.
