Trump Signals Possible Iran Talks as Israel–Lebanon Breakthrough Opens Rare Diplomatic Track
Trump signals renewed Iran negotiations while Israel and Lebanon begin direct talks after Washington-mediated meeting.
US President Donald Trump has indicated that negotiations with Iran may resume this week, even as Israel and Lebanon agreed to open direct talks in a rare diplomatic breakthrough.
Trump told The New York Post that US-Iran discussions could take place in Pakistan “over the next two days,” saying he had been contacted by Iranian officials seeking an agreement.
The twin diplomatic moves come amid continued violence in the region, highlighting both progress and instability in efforts to end a prolonged conflict.
The Israel-Lebanon talks, held in Washington and mediated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, represent the first direct high-level engagement between both countries since 1993.
A US State Department statement said:
“All sides agreed to launch direct negotiations at a mutually agreed time and venue.”
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the initiative as a chance to “mark the beginning of the end of the suffering of the Lebanese people.”
Israeli and Lebanese envoys described the meeting as constructive, though Hezbollah opposed the talks and reportedly launched rocket attacks during the session.
Military Pressure on Iran Continues
Alongside diplomacy, the United States intensified pressure on Iran with a naval blockade enforced by U.S. Central Command.
CENTCOM said it had “completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea,” effectively tightening restrictions on maritime activity.
Iran condemned the blockade as piracy and warned of wider regional consequences, while China called the move “dangerous and irresponsible.”
The U.S. strategy is widely seen as targeting Iran’s oil revenue and influencing global energy flows, particularly exports to China.
Despite this, a temporary truce between Washington and Tehran remains active, and Trump has suggested the conflict may be nearing its end.
Markets responded positively, with oil prices easing amid hopes of renewed negotiations and possible de-escalation.
