The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Olayemi Cardoso, and the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, are set to lead discussions at the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum taking place in Abuja this week.

The two-day event, billed for Wednesday, July 29, and Thursday, July 30, at the CBN headquarters, is being hosted by the apex bank in collaboration with the Emerging Markets Forum (EMF) and the Centre for the Study of the Economies of Africa (CSEA).

One of the major attractions of the forum will be a fireside dialogue between Cardoso and Okonjo-Iweala centred on the theme, “Building Resilience Amidst Geoeconomic Uncertainties.”

The session will examine ways African countries can maintain reform momentum, strengthen regional integration, build resilient economies and achieve long-term growth despite increasing global economic fragmentation.

The event will bring together central bank governors, finance ministers, senior government officials, economists, development partners and private sector leaders from across Africa and other parts of the world to discuss policy options for navigating the evolving global economic environment.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr Kingsley Udeh, are also expected to deliver keynote speeches.

Organisers said their presentations will highlight the need for closer alignment between fiscal, monetary and innovation policies to accelerate Africa’s economic transformation.

Among the other high-profile participants are World Bank Group Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President for Development Economics, Indermit Gill; Emerging Markets Forum Founder and Chief Executive, Mr Harinder Kohli; and Ahmadu Bello University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adamu Ahmed.

Over the course of the forum, delegates will discuss macroeconomic stability, regional economic integration, cross-border payments, financial technology, infrastructure, foreign direct investment, technology transfer and artificial intelligence.

Additional sessions will focus on food inflation, price volatility, monetary policy transmission and the economic challenges confronting fragile and post-crisis states.

The organisers said the forum is designed to foster constructive dialogue on the challenges facing emerging markets while developing practical policy recommendations for sustainable growth.

They added that the initiative demonstrates the commitment of the CBN and its partners to promoting regional cooperation, evidence-based policymaking and innovative approaches to inclusive economic development across Africa.
