Nigeria’s political landscape is becoming increasingly competitive following the conclusion of party primaries ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

With economic challenges, insecurity and public frustration dominating national discourse, opposition candidates are outlining their plans to convince voters they can provide better leadership than President Bola Tinubu.

The election is expected to be one of the most open contests in recent history, with a crowded field of candidates from multiple political parties.

Atiku Seeks Structural Reforms

ADC candidate Atiku Abubakar says his ambition is driven by the need to restructure Nigeria’s federal system and strengthen economic growth.

His proposals include devolving powers to states, encouraging private sector participation, attracting foreign investment and improving security through stronger intelligence operations.

However, analysts note that he faces the challenge of overcoming voter fatigue after several previous attempts at the presidency.

Obi Promises Economic Transformation

NDC candidate Peter Obi has built his campaign around economic productivity, healthcare expansion, food security and improved power supply.

He argues that Nigeria’s future depends on shifting the economy from consumption to production while addressing poverty and unemployment.

Obi also advocates technology-driven security reforms and expanded support for small businesses.

Duke Wants Governance Innovation

PRP flag bearer Donald Duke says Nigeria requires imaginative governance and innovative economic planning.

Olawepo-Hashim Pushes Institutional Reforms

Accord Party candidate Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim is campaigning on constitutional reforms, stronger institutions and economic diversification.

He maintains that sustainable development can only be achieved through functional democratic institutions and reduced dependence on oil revenue.

Onor Bets on Consensus Leadership

The Wike-backed PDP faction selected Sandy Onor as its consensus candidate.

Onor has centred his campaign on competence, discipline and consensus governance, while insisting that his emergence improves the PDP’s chances of returning to power.

Other Aspirants Present Alternative Visions

SDP candidate Adewole Adebayo is campaigning on constitutionalism, economic diversification and democratic reforms.

BOOT Party candidate Sonny Adenuga is advocating digital governance, transparent public finance systems and technology-based anti-corruption measures.

Labour Party flag bearer Chibuzo Okereke is promoting policy-based governance and institutional development.

NRM candidate Esther Nkem Okeke has pledged proactive leadership to address insecurity and economic difficulties, while emphasizing unity and innovation.

ADP presidential candidate Aliyu Bin Abbas is focusing on youth empowerment, women inclusion and technological innovation.

According to Abbas:

“This milestone represents more than a political victory; it signifies the emergence of a new generation of leadership committed to national renewal, inclusive governance, economic transformation, and the empowerment of Nigerian youths.”
