Tinubu Promises Tougher Action Against Insecurity, Says Nigeria Won’t Yield to Criminals
Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration will continue fighting insecurity while working to reduce economic hardship.
President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration will continue to confront terrorism, banditry and other security threats, insisting that the country will never bow to criminal elements.
The President also pledged renewed efforts to tackle the economic hardship affecting citizens across the nation.
The assurance was delivered by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held on Sunday at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, to commemorate the 2026 Democracy Day celebrations.
A statement by Yomi Odunuga, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, said the event carried the theme “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams.”
The service attracted top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Head of Civil Service Didi Walson-Jack.
Speaking on behalf of the President, Akume celebrated Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999, describing the milestone as proof of the determination and sacrifices of citizens who fought to restore democracy.
He honoured the memory of June 12 pro-democracy activists who endured persecution and made significant sacrifices in the struggle for democratic rule.
Addressing the nation’s challenges, the SGF acknowledged the economic difficulties, insecurity, kidnappings and displacement affecting many communities.
“Government is sensitive to all these pains, shares in these pains and has heard your cries,” he said.
He stated that the Tinubu administration remains committed to addressing the challenges responsibly and compassionately.
The President noted that recent attacks and kidnappings underscore the need for continued efforts to improve security nationwide. He assured citizens that the rescue of those still held captive remains a major national objective.
He added that security agencies are receiving the support and resources needed to defend lives, protect communities and preserve national unity.
“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation.”
With political activities ahead of the 2027 elections already gathering momentum, Tinubu cautioned Nigerians against violence, hate-driven campaigns and actions capable of undermining democratic values.
He urged young people not to become instruments of political violence, misinformation, ethnic division or religious intolerance.
“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience.”
The President also appealed to religious leaders, traditional institutions, civil society organisations, families and the media to promote peace, tolerance and national cohesion.
He concluded by applauding the armed forces and other security personnel for their commitment and sacrifices in protecting Nigeria’s democracy and safeguarding citizens.
