Atletico Madrid cruised to a 5-2 Champions League first-leg victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, taking advantage of Tottenham’s defensive lapses at the Metropolitano Stadium.

Tottenham fell 4-0 behind in just 22 minutes, with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky making two costly errors and contributing to the early onslaught.

Julian Alvarez scored a brace for Diego Simeone’s side, with Marcos Llorente, Antoine Griezmann, and Robin Le Normand also on the scoresheet. Tottenham hit back through Pedro Porro and Dominic Solanke, keeping a faint hope alive for the second leg.

Interim Spurs boss Igor Tudor described the game as a chance to address the team’s issues amid their battle against Premier League relegation. Tudor opted for Kinsky over Guglielmo Vicario, but the young goalkeeper’s early mistakes gifted Atletico multiple goals.

Alvarez’s composure, coupled with defensive errors from Spurs, allowed the Spanish side to race into a commanding lead. Vicario replaced Kinsky after 17 minutes, making several key saves, but Atletico’s dominance was clear, with Alvarez adding a fifth goal in the second half following Griezmann’s assist.

Despite Spurs’ late strikes from Porro and Solanke, Atletico leave Madrid in firm control of the tie, while Tottenham must now focus on Premier League survival alongside their second-leg challenge.
