President Bola Tinubu has instructed FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to provide land along Abuja’s Airport Road for the development of the Abdulsalami Abubakar Africa Resource Centre.

Tinubu also committed the Federal Government to financing the construction of the facility during the public presentation of three books honouring former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, where over ₦2 billion was realised.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President said the proposed centre reflects the ideals and principles that Abdulsalami has promoted throughout his lifetime.

“The establishment of the Abdulsalami Abubakar Africa Resource Centre is a worthy initiative that aligns with the values General Abdulsalami Abubakar has championed throughout his life.

“In recognition of its importance, I hereby direct the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to allocate a very huge piece of land within the Federal Capital Territory along the Airport Road for the development of the centre and the advancement of its mission.”

Shettima added that Tinubu had already examined the project’s building plan and approved federal funding for its execution.

“Your Excellency, Mr President has seen the building plan for the structure — and has promised that the Federal Government will fund the construction of the centre.”

The President praised Abdulsalami’s leadership style, noting that his legacy demonstrates the importance of integrity, moderation and service in nation-building.

“As we celebrate your remarkable life and legacy, we are reminded that nations are built not merely by those who hold power, but by those who exercise it with restraint, integrity, and a sense of duty to future generations. Those qualities are defined in our public life.”

Tinubu also lauded the writers of the books unveiled at the event, saying their works would help preserve Abdulsalami’s contributions for future generations.

The event, titled “The Legacy of a Statesman @84,” was chaired by former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon and featured a keynote address by former South African President Thabo Mbeki on democratic transition and peace-building in Africa.

Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar assumed power following the death of Gen. Sani Abacha in June 1998 and later supervised the transition that returned Nigeria to civilian rule in 1999.
