Leicester City’s long fall from English football’s summit reached its lowest point on Tuesday as a 2-2 draw with Hull City sealed relegation to League One.

Gary Rowett’s side went into the match needing victory to keep survival hopes alive at the King Power Stadium, but instead saw their fate confirmed when Oli McBurnie’s second-half equaliser cancelled out their brief comeback.

Liam Millar had given Hull the lead in the 18th minute, before James Justin levelled from the spot. Luke Thomas then briefly put Leicester ahead, but McBurnie’s strike in the 63rd minute ended any hope of escape.

Leicester now sit second-bottom, seven points adrift with only two games remaining.

The relegation marks a historic low for a club that were Premier League champions in 2016 against 5,000–1 odds, and later reached Champions League quarter-finals and won the FA Cup in 2021.

They will now play in the third tier for the first time since 2008–09, completing a collapse that has included three relegations in four seasons.

Behind the scenes, instability has mirrored results on the pitch. Owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha and sporting director Jon Rudkin have faced sustained criticism over recruitment failures, financial mismanagement, and delayed decision-making.

Financial sanctions, including a six-point deduction for breaching spending rules, further damaged their campaign.

Managerial turnover has been constant, with Claudio Ranieri, Brendan Rodgers, Enzo Maresca, Steve Cooper and others all departing during the club’s decline.

Gary Rowett, appointed in February, has struggled to reverse fortunes, managing just one win in 12 matches.

What was once one of football’s greatest underdog stories has now become a cautionary tale of decline and instability.
