Chaos erupted at a Washington media gala Saturday night as gunshots rang out, forcing U.S. Secret Service agents to evacuate Donald Trump from the stage.

The event, the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton, was attended by Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, top government officials, and hundreds of guests when the shooting occurred.

According to officials, a suspect armed with multiple weapons breached a security checkpoint outside the ballroom, triggering an exchange of gunfire with security personnel. Guests scrambled for safety, taking cover under tables as heavily armed teams secured the venue.

“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said following the incident, describing the attacker as a “would-be assassin.”

“They seem to think he was a lone wolf, and I feel that too,” he added.

Washington police chief Jeffery Carroll confirmed that a Secret Service officer was struck during the exchange but was protected by a vest and is expected to recover.

The suspect, believed to have been staying at the hotel, was taken into custody at the scene. Authorities said he was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and knives, and will face charges including firearm use and assault when arraigned on Monday.

Trump later raised concerns about the venue’s security, calling it “not a particularly secure” location, and said he initially mistook the gunfire for a harmless noise.

Law enforcement officials conducted a search at a residence in Torrance, California, linked to the suspect. While several media outlets identified him as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, the FBI has yet to confirm his identity.

The incident unfolded before Trump was scheduled to speak, with cabinet members evacuated as confusion spread. Police quickly secured the area, and helicopters were deployed overhead.

The Washington Hilton, which hosted the gala, is historically notable as the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.

Despite the scare, Trump indicated that the annual event—popularly known as the “Nerd Prom”—will be rescheduled within a month.
