In an era where political power often feels distant from the people it is meant to serve, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State is building a new narrative—one where governance is measured not just by budgets and blueprints, but by empathy, strategic impact, and the everyday dignity of citizens.

Now in his second year in office, Yusuf’s leadership has shifted from campaign promises to transformative action—balancing infrastructure with human development, and policy reform with the personal touch of compassion.

What emerges is a portrait of a leader reshaping Kano State with bold priorities and a deeply human heart. Here are five remarkable wins that have marked his second year in office:

1. Raising the Bar in Education

Governor Yusuf has elevated education from a routine public function to a state priority. Allocating 31% of the 2025 budget to education—well above the UNESCO benchmark—he continues his upward trajectory from the previous year’s 29.9%.

These figures are not mere optics. Under Yusuf’s leadership, 402 new classrooms are springing up across the 44 local government areas, with 250 existing ones undergoing rehabilitation through empowered Community Re-orientation Committees. Over 73,800 desks have been distributed, while a combined total of nearly 10,000 new teachers—both permanent and BESDA—are being deployed into classrooms, improving teacher-student ratios.

Perhaps most striking is the governor’s commitment to global competitiveness: 54 postgraduate students sponsored to India returned with guaranteed civil service employment—transforming their lives and enriching the state’s talent pool.

2. Strengthening Healthcare from the Ground Up

Yusuf’s approach to healthcare is grounded in both accessibility and innovation. Through initiatives like the 2024 Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health Week, over ₦1 billion was deployed to train health workers and offer free maternal care.

More than 500 new healthcare professionals—including doctors and nurses—have joined the public system, rejuvenating primary and secondary facilities. The renovation of Nuhu Bamalli Maternity Hospital and the establishment of new rural health centres expand the state’s reach.

Crucially, a 25-member immunization taskforce and the certification of over 5,000 traditional medicine vendors signal a thoughtful integration of modern and indigenous health systems—ensuring care is both widespread and culturally grounded.

3. Infrastructure with a Vision

Kano’s skyline is evolving—not just with concrete, but with clarity of purpose. In 2024, the state committed ₦7.7 billion to strategic infrastructure projects. Landmark among them is the ₦27 billion three-layer interchange bridge, slated for completion in 2025—a legacy project that will transform urban mobility.

In addition, the administration approved ₦8.2 billion for 15 new projects in January 2025 and re-awarded the dualization of Bebeji Road for ₦3.2 billion. From Sabon Gari’s Zungeru Road to rural connectors boosting agriculture, these developments are reshaping how Kano moves, trades, and thrives.

To ensure sustainability, Yusuf signed the Kano State Infrastructure Management Agency (KASIMA) bill—establishing a forward-thinking institution to oversee the lifecycle of public assets.

4. A Governor Who Leads with Empathy

Beyond statistics, Yusuf’s most unforgettable legacy may lie in his profound emotional intelligence. During the 2024 Independence Day, he adopted 95 orphans, committing to their education, healthcare, and wellbeing throughout his tenure. His government also delivered food supplies and other welfare interventions to orphanages across the state.

When Hauwa Yusuf, a 31-year-old law graduate with muscular dystrophy, needed hope, the governor stepped in—offering support, employment for her caregiver, and emotional connection through his own daughter. In Rimin Zakara, following a tragic fire, Yusuf personally comforted grieving families and launched a multi-billion naira recovery effort.

Such acts of compassion are not staged—they are an extension of leadership rooted in humanity.

5. Rewarding Talent, Managing Resources Smartly

One of the governor’s lesser-publicized victories is his efficient budget management. A 77% budget execution rate in 2024 places Kano far ahead of many sub-national peers in Nigeria.

The same fiscal discipline enabled Yusuf to resolve a diplomatic deadlock, by settling ₦2.24 billion in tuition fees for stranded Kano students in Cyprus—securing their certificates and future. More than that, these graduates now have automatic employment in the state’s civil service—a rare blend of rescue and reintegration.

Recognition, at Home and Abroad

Governor Yusuf’s work has not gone unnoticed. The Nigeria Union of Teachers honored him with the Golden Award for education reform.

The Nigerian Medical Association presented its Service of Excellence Award, while Leadership Newspaper and Vanguard named him Governor of the Year 2024 for education and good governance, respectively.

On the global stage, Yusuf was presented with the African Good Governance Award in Morocco—affirming the growing perception of Kano as a model for people-centered governance in Nigeria.

From his policy commitments to his personal compassion, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s second year in office illustrates how transformative leadership is not a matter of slogans or survival, but of sincerity, vision, and the courage to lead with both the head and the heart.
