Koke Urges Atletico Madrid to Show Character Against Barcelona in UCL Second Leg

Koke says Atletico must beat Barcelona’s aggressive press and show personality as they defend a 2-0 first-leg lead.

Koke has called on Atletico Madrid to display “personality” as they prepare to face FC Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

Atletico take a 2-0 lead into Tuesday’s return leg at the Metropolitano Stadium after their first-leg victory at Camp Nou, with a place in the semi-finals — their first since 2017 — within reach.

Barcelona, who reached the semi-finals last season and are five-time European champions, arrive determined to overturn the deficit and apply pressure on the hosts.

“It’s hugely important to beat the press they usually put on,” Koke said.

“They’re a team that presses very high… that suffocates you.”

He stressed that Atletico’s response must come through control and confidence on the ball.

“That’s where our personality comes in… to want the ball, to make ourselves available, to make runs in behind.”

The midfielder highlighted how familiar both sides are with each other after multiple meetings this season.

“We’ve faced each other many times throughout this year,” he said.

“We know each other perfectly, and it’s going to be very important to take the ball off them, attack the spaces well…”

Koke also reflected on past Champions League memories, including his goal against Barcelona in 2014.

“I’ve watched that goal quite a few times,” he admitted, adding that such moments help motivation ahead of big matches.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone kept his comments brief, declining to confirm team news around Jan Oblak but stressing the team’s objective.

“We’re fully aware of the strong opponent we’ll have in front of us… But we’re also clear about our objective, which is to go through.”
