The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled stricter financial accountability measures for its candidates while emphasizing that the party will not be built around any individual leader or political figure.

The decisions emerged from resolutions adopted at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and released on Sunday by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director.

According to the NDC, its focus is on building a durable political institution guided by transparency, discipline and collective leadership.

“The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded.”

The party maintained that loyalty to the organisation and commitment to national development must take precedence over personal interests and political ambitions.

Candidates Must Account for Campaign Spending

In a major policy shift, the NDC directed all candidates seeking elective positions under its platform to disclose all campaign-related funding and expenditures.

The party stated that monies raised by candidates and donations received for campaigns must be reported to the party hierarchy at all levels.

“For candidates, there must also be strict accountability for all funding received.”

To strengthen financial oversight, the NDC said campaign funds for presidential, governorship and other elections must be managed through designated party campaign accounts.

Major Decisions Must Align With Party Position

The party reiterated that governments elected on its platform would be expected to work closely with party structures on key policy decisions and appointments.

“The party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party.”

It also directed all affiliated groups and non-governmental organisations linked to the party to operate under its supervision rather than independently.

Focus on Discipline and Unity

As part of efforts to improve internal governance, the NEC established a committee headed by the National Legal Adviser to develop a code of conduct for officials and candidates.

The party also inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee to address grievances and foster unity among members.

The NDC said the reforms are intended to strengthen the party as a lasting institution capable of serving Nigerians beyond immediate electoral contests.
