Given the foregoing, it suffices to opine in this context that resorting to the constitutional is Imperative; impeachment is not a political weapon.  Under “Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution”, the process of impeaching a governor is deliberately rigorous. The law requires a multi-step procedure, including a proper investigation, the establishment of an impartial panel, and the guarantee of a fair hearing for the governor. These safeguards exist to prevent abuse of power and ensure that impeachment remains a mechanism for justice, not vendetta.

Unfortunately, history in Nigeria and across other democratic states has shown that politically motivated impeachments almost always fail judicial scrutiny. Courts have repeatedly nullified impeachments conducted without full adherence to constitutional procedures. Lawmakers in Rivers State must recognize that any attempt to sidestep due process, no matter how urgent or politically convenient, risks legal invalidation and public backlash.

Moreover, governors enjoy immunity from civil or criminal proceedings while in office under “Section 308 of the Constitution”. Any attempt to impeach a governor outside the bounds of due process violates this constitutional protection, further exposing lawmakers to legal and ethical consequences. Attempting to bypass immunity in the pursuit of partisan goals is not just unlawful; it undermines the rule of law itself.

Beyond legal concerns, partisan impeachment poses serious political risks.
