As I read the news headline “Northern govs, others lose fight against tax bills”, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief and optimism for the future of our nation’s economy.

The defeat of the Northern Governors’ Forum and other opposing groups in their fight against the tax bills marks a significant victory for economic progress and development in Nigeria.

For too long, our country has struggled with a dysfunctional tax system that has hindered economic growth and development. The tax bills aim to reform the tax system and make it more efficient and effective in generating revenue for the government.

One of the primary concerns of the Northern Governors’ Forum and other opposing groups was that the tax bills would disproportionately affect the North and exacerbate regional disparities.

However, this argument is based on a flawed assumption that the tax bills are designed to punish the North. In reality, the tax bills are designed to promote economic growth and development across all regions of Nigeria.

By creating a more efficient and effective tax system, the government can generate more revenue to fund critical infrastructure projects and social programs that benefit all Nigerians.

The tax bills contain provisions that address the concerns of the Northern Governors’ Forum and other opposing groups. For example, the bills provide for a gradual implementation of the tax reforms to minimize the impact on businesses and individuals.

The tax bills have received widespread support from various stakeholders, including the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI).

These organizations have recognized the potential of the tax bills to promote economic growth and development in Nigeria. I commend the National Assembly for passing the tax bills into law.
