The UAE supported the US decision to label Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, citing the group’s use of violence against civilians, while Sudanese and paramilitary groups also reacted to the designation.

The United Arab Emirates expressed support on Monday for the United States’ move to classify Sudan’s Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.

The new designation will take effect in a week and follows the US labeling of other Brotherhood branches, including in Egypt, earlier this year.

“The United Arab Emirates welcomed the announcement by the administration of US President Donald Trump to designate the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organisation,” the UAE Foreign Ministry said on X.

Although the UAE has been accused of arming Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), engaged in fighting the army since April 2023, it denies such claims. Sudan’s army has also faced accusations of ties to the Brotherhood, which it rejects.

The RSF welcomed the US decision, stating it “reflects growing awareness of the scale of suffering the Sudanese people have endured during the past years.” Meanwhile, Sudanese civil groups, led by ex-Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, said the move reflects “the will of the vast majority of the Sudanese people who rose up” during the 2019 revolution.
