US Warns Iran Ahead of Pakistan Talks as Ceasefire Strains Persist

US Vice President JD Vance has warned Iran not to “play” the United States as he heads to Islamabad for high-stakes talks aimed at strengthening a fragile ceasefire.

Tensions remain high despite the truce, with both sides accusing each other of failing to fully honour the agreement.

“If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we’re certainly willing to extend the open hand,” Vance said before departing Maryland.

“But if they’re going to try to play us, then they’re going to find the negotiating team is not that receptive.”

President Donald Trump has expressed frustration over Iran’s actions regarding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global trade route expected to reopen under the ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Iran has strongly criticised Israeli operations in Lebanon, arguing they violate the agreement.

Officials say the Islamabad talks will tackle sensitive issues, including nuclear enrichment and the free flow of trade through the strait.

Although talks were expected to begin Friday, Vance is scheduled to arrive Saturday, with heavy security already deployed around the Serena Hotel.

Iran has warned it may not fully engage unless Israeli attacks stop. “The holding of talks to end the war is dependent on the US adhering to its ceasefire commitments on all fronts, especially in Lebanon,” said Esmaeil Baqaei.

Despite describing the talks as potentially “meaningless” due to continued strikes, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards indicated adherence to the ceasefire.

Trump, however, accused Iran of breaching the agreement and restricting oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz.

Even so, Vance emphasised a diplomatic approach, stating: “We’re going to try to have a positive negotiation.”
