Ambassador Bashir Yuguda, a former minister and diplomat, has defended the legacy of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, pushing back against comments by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that characterised his administration as one of “inexperience.”

In a statement to the media, Yuguda acknowledged Atiku’s description of Jonathan as a “decent man,” but said claims about inexperience distort the historical record.

Drawing on his experience serving under Jonathan, Yuguda outlined the former president’s progression through major public offices, including Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President, Acting President, and President.

He credited the Jonathan administration with significant economic achievements, noting that Nigeria became Africa’s largest economy during that period, supported by improved investor confidence and macroeconomic stability.

“These were not accidental gains,” Yuguda said. “They were the product of deliberate policy choices and disciplined implementation.”

Yuguda also pointed to agricultural reforms that improved food supply and earned international recognition for reducing hunger levels.

On infrastructure, he highlighted efforts to rehabilitate long-neglected rail networks.

“I had the privilege of commissioning the rehabilitation of the Zaria–Gusau–Kaura Namoda rail line,” he said, adding that such projects were central to improving transportation and economic activity.

He further noted that Nigeria enhanced its international standing during Jonathan’s presidency, including winning election to the United Nations Security Council twice in a short span.

“Nigeria’s voice carried weight globally,” Yuguda said. “Our engagements were strategic, and our leadership was respected across international platforms.”

Yuguda described Jonathan’s calm disposition and adherence to democratic principles as key attributes of his leadership.

“Even under pressure, President Jonathan remained calm, respectful, and committed to national unity,” he said.

He cited the 2015 general elections as a defining moment, noting Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat peacefully.

“Faced with security challenges and intense political contestation, President Jonathan chose the path of peace,” he said. “His decision to concede defeat without hesitation strengthened Nigeria’s democratic culture.”

Yuguda said the move continues to resonate as an example of responsible leadership.

“He demonstrated that leadership is not defined by how power is acquired, but by how it is exercised and relinquished,” he added.

While conceding that every administration has shortcomings, Yuguda warned against “revisionist narratives” that downplay past achievements.

“Constructive criticism must be grounded in fact, not convenience,” he said, urging Nigerians to assess leaders based on verifiable records.

“President Jonathan’s record is visible and enduring,” Yuguda said. “It deserves to be represented accurately.”
