Iran has executed a man it says carried out a “mission” on behalf of Israel’s intelligence agency during nationwide protests in January, the judiciary announced on Saturday.

The execution marks part of a broader wave of capital punishments since hostilities escalated with Israel and the United States.

Erfan Kiani was put to death after the Supreme Court upheld his sentence, according to a report by the judiciary’s Mizan Online outlet.

Officials labelled him among the “main operatives” involved in a “mission assigned by Mossad” during unrest in the central province of Isfahan.

The judiciary alleged that he was responsible for “destruction of public and private property, arson, possession and use of Molotov cocktails, carrying a bladed weapon, blocking vehicle routes, attacking officers, and creating fear and panic among citizens”.

The development follows the execution of another individual on Thursday who had been convicted of belonging to a banned opposition organisation.

Iran has intensified executions since the war with Israel and the United States began on February 28.

Authorities claim the January protests were incited by foreign actors, including Israel, the United States and opposition groups such as the banned People’s Mujahedin.

Since March 19, nine men have been executed over alleged links to the unrest.

Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, say Iran is the second most frequent user of capital punishment globally, after China.
