2026 Budget: NCA Questions N8bn Religious Project Allocation, Seeks Fairness

The Northern Christian Association (NCA) has urged the Federal Government to justify the allocation of about N8.05 billion for church and mosque projects in the proposed 2026 budget, expressing concern over what it described as a significant disparity in the distribution of funds.

In a statement released on Monday, NCA Chairman Rev. Joseph Hayab said the association supports government collaboration with religious bodies but insisted that budgetary allocations must reflect the constitutional values of equity, justice and transparency.

According to the NCA, the proposed budget provides N1.91 billion for seven church projects, compared to N6.14 billion for 52 mosque projects.

Hayab said the difference has intensified concerns among Christians over what they perceive as unequal treatment by successive governments.

“How long will Nigerians continue to read stories that expose the hypocrisy of our leaders?” he asked.

He maintained that unequal treatment and the absence of fairness in governance have contributed to national division and declining public trust.

“The partiality, lack of equity and unequal treatment of citizens by government and political leaders are among the major factors responsible for division, distrust, segregation and the absence of genuine unity and love among Nigerians.”

The NCA said Christians have consistently demonstrated patience in the interest of national peace and unity but cautioned that such restraint should not be interpreted as acceptance of perceived discrimination.

The association clarified that its concerns are not directed against any religion but are focused on ensuring fairness in the distribution of public funds.

It called on the Federal Government to review the allocations and provide a clear explanation, stressing that budget decisions should promote national unity, transparency and equal treatment of all citizens.
