Aaron Ramsey Retires After Illustrious Career With Arsenal, Wales and Juventus
Ex-Arsenal and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey retires after struggling with injuries, concluding a career spanning top European clubs and international duty.
Aaron Ramsey, the former Arsenal midfielder and Wales captain, has retired from football at the age of 35, bringing an end to a career that spanned top European clubs and international tournaments.
The midfielder had been unattached since leaving Mexican club Pumas at the end of last year, following earlier stints at Arsenal, Juventus, Nice and Cardiff City.
Persistent injuries and reduced playing opportunities limited his involvement in recent years, with his last appearance for Wales coming in 2024, where he earned a total of 86 international caps. He was omitted from Wales’ squad for their recent World Cup qualifying match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ended in a penalty shoot-out defeat.
Ramsey confirmed his retirement via Instagram, writing:
“This has not been an easy decision to make.
“After a lot of consideration, I have decided to retire from football.
“Firstly, I want to start with Wales. It has been my privilege to wear the Welsh shirt and experience so many incredible moments in it…
“To the Red Wall (Wales fans)… you have been an essential and indispensable part of our success… Diolch (thank you).
“Secondly, thank you to all the clubs I’ve been lucky enough to play for… it’s been an honour to represent you.”
Ramsey was instrumental in Wales’ remarkable journey to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and also represented his country at Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.
Wales manager Craig Bellamy previously praised him as “one of the best players to ever play for Wales,” highlighting his leadership and influence on emerging talents, although he was later excluded from selection due to a lack of competitive match fitness.
Over the course of his career, Ramsey won three FA Cups with Arsenal, a Serie A title and two Coppa Italia trophies with Juventus, a Scottish Cup with Rangers, and featured in two Europa League finals.
