Champions League: Arsenal Seek Response in Sporting Clash After Shock Defeats

Mikel Arteta calls for resilience as Arsenal take on Sporting after back-to-back losses in domestic competitions.

Arsenal head into their Champions League quarter-final against Sporting CP facing a defining moment in their season, with manager Mikel Arteta urging his squad to prove their character.

Back-to-back losses — a 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Southampton and a 2-0 League Cup final loss to Manchester City — have derailed Arsenal’s pursuit of a historic quadruple and raised fresh questions about their ability to deliver silverware.

The defeats, only their fifth of the campaign and their first consecutive losses this season, have left fans searching for answers, especially with the club still chasing a first trophy since the 2020 FA Cup.

Arteta, however, believes this challenging spell is part of the journey.

“In the season, you always have moments, normally two or three. This is the first moment that we have with a certain level of difficulty,” he said.

“If this is a difficult period, I believe there are many other ones that are much more difficult, so let’s stand up, make yourself comfortable and deliver like we’ve been doing all season.”

Confidence Amid Pressure

Despite the turbulence, Arsenal remain in a strong position — leading the Premier League by nine points and entering the Sporting tie as favourites.

Arteta struck a defiant tone in defence of his players.

“I love my players. What they have done for nine months, I’m not going to criticise them because we lost a game in the manner that they are putting their bodies through everything,” he said.

“I’m going to defend them more than ever… we have the most beautiful period of the season ahead of us.”

Form, Fitness and Hope

Recent performances from Viktor Gyokeres have provided encouragement, while memories of last season’s emphatic 5-1 win over Sporting offer further belief.

But injuries could prove decisive, with Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Magalhaes all fitness concerns.

Midfielder Christian Norgaard emphasised the need for resilience.

“The message is to have a positive body language… Now is not the time to go with our heads down for too long,” he said.

“It’s fine to be frustrated… but then we also have to look forward because there are so many big games coming up.”
