Global Oil Route Reopens as Iran Confirms Ceasefire Deal with US

Iran and the US agree to a ceasefire, allowing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.

The Strait of Hormuz has reopened after Iran confirmed a two-week ceasefire agreement with the United States, first announced by President Donald Trump.

Tasnim news agency reported early Wednesday that Tehran had accepted the truce, marking a significant de-escalation after weeks of conflict.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said shipping through the strait would resume under military coordination, noting that safe passage would be ensured “with due consideration of technical limitations.”

Trump had tied the ceasefire to the reopening of the waterway, warning of potential strikes on Iran’s energy sector and infrastructure, including bridges, if the deadline was not met.

The strategic strait, a key artery for global oil and gas trade, had been largely closed since the US and Israel began large-scale attacks on Iran on February 28.

A senior US official confirmed that Israel would observe what Trump called a “double sided CEASEFIRE.”

Mediation efforts by Pakistan helped secure the agreement, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announcing that the ceasefire had taken effect immediately.

Sharif said the agreement covered all theatres of conflict, including Lebanon.

“I warmly welcome the sagacious gesture and extend deepest gratitude to the leadership of both the countries and invite their delegations to Islamabad on Friday … to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes,” he stated.

Trump also noted that Sharif had appealed to him to refrain from launching the threatened attacks.

The US leader added that Iran had submitted a 10-point proposal, which he described as “workable,” while The New York Times reported that the plan includes lifting all sanctions on Tehran.
