Barcelona Coach Flick Defends Yamal’s Reaction, Calls Teen ‘Emotional but Exceptional’

Hansi Flick explains Yamal’s reaction, insisting the 18-year-old is still learning ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League tie.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has come to the defence of Lamine Yamal after the youngster’s emotional reaction during their recent La Liga encounter with Atletico Madrid.

Yamal, 18, was visibly upset after being criticised by a goalkeeper coach for opting to shoot rather than pass, but Flick dismissed concerns, describing the reaction as part of his growth.

Ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash against Atletico at the Nou Camp, the coach emphasised the need for patience with the rising star.

“What we have to remember is that Lamine is 18 years old. He’s an incredible player… But he’s only 18. Sometimes he gets upset… He might be frustrated. He’s emotional, and that’s okay. We support him. We help him grow… We’ll always protect him. He’ll be the best in the future,” Flick said.

Flick also pointed out that European fixtures present a different level of intensity compared to league matches.

“It’s different… The Champions League is a different competition… We’re playing against a tough opponent with fantastic players. We want to advance to the next round,” he noted.

On Atletico Madrid, Flick acknowledged their physicality and tactical discipline, warning his team to stay focused.

“Atletico is a tough team… It’s not easy to score two goals against Atletico… It’s always tough,” he said.

“The match will be very exciting… We have to focus on our own game. That’s what I want to see,” he added.

Barcelona will now aim to secure a positive result in the first leg as they pursue progression in Europe’s top competition.
