Datti: I Warned Peter Obi Against Joining ADC, But He Didn’t Listen

Datti Baba-Ahmed says he warned Peter Obi against joining the ADC, insisting Obi moved out of his political comfort zone against his advice.

Datti Baba-Ahmed has said Peter Obi went beyond his political “comfort zone” despite his advice ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Baba-Ahmed, who was Obi’s running mate under the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election, made the disclosure during an interview with MIC ON Podcast.

Speaking about his relationship and political outlook toward Obi since their 2023 campaign, Baba-Ahmed said he had cautioned the former Anambra governor against joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He recalled that he personally sought Obi out at the Yar’Adua Centre to explain why he believed the party was unsuitable for him.

“When he was going to join ADC, I had to go to Yar’Adua Centre ahead of him, I called him aside. They were worried. Why is Datti calling Peter Obi aside and talking to him?” he said.

According to Baba-Ahmed, he made it clear to Obi that he disagreed with the proposed move and warned that it could work against his political ambitions.

“And I told him, ‘This is the last time I’m coming to this place. I gave him my reasons. This is not a place for you.’ Was I wrong? I was proven right,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed further pointed to Obi’s exit from the ADC several months later as evidence that his warning had been justified.

“Within four months, Peter Obi left ADC,” he said.

He also criticised what he described as inconsistencies in political positions, although he said he did not intend to revisit or criticise Atiku Abubakar’s political activities.

“Now, I don’t like people who contradict themselves, and I don’t want to go into criticising again the politics of Atiku because that’s not what I’m about,” Baba-Ahmed said.

He explained that his ability to influence Obi’s political decisions became limited after Obi chose not to follow his advice.

“Peter Obi moved out of his comfort zone against my advice. Beyond that point, I could no longer help him,” he said.

Obi and Baba-Ahmed were the Labour Party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively in the 2023 general election. They finished third, behind Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.
