The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has intensified with the emergence of a third faction aligned with former presidential candidate Dumebi Kachikwu.

The new group, made up of some state chairmen, announced in Abuja that it supports the electoral commission’s decision to withdraw recognition of the David Mark-led leadership, describing the move as consistent with a court ruling.

It also distanced itself from the Nafiu Bala Gombe faction, insisting neither group has the legitimacy to lead the party.

“We hereby disassociate ourselves from David Mark and his exco… We also distance ourselves from the Nafiu Bala Gombe group,” the faction declared.

The group named Kingsley Temitope as interim national chairman and said its actions were aimed at preserving the party’s structure ahead of future elections.

“We are on a rescue mission to save the ADC…,” it stated, adding that the NEC remains the only lawful structure to engage with electoral authorities.

But the Mark-led leadership dismissed the move, with spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi describing it as opportunistic and insisting: “In the end, it is the court that will decide.”

Queen Okiyi of the same camp alleged that members of the new faction were compromised, saying: “They’ve been bought over… You cannot remain a member and then choose to act in defiance of its rules.”

The crisis has drawn wider political reactions. The Lagos APC maintained that democracy would not collapse if opposition parties fail to meet electoral requirements, stating: “Heavens will not fall if the ADC… fails to appear on the ballot.”

Meanwhile, Gani Adams cautioned against actions that could weaken opposition parties, warning that Nigeria risks sliding into authoritarianism.

“A democracy without opposition is becoming a dictatorship,” he said, calling on the judiciary to safeguard democratic principles.
