Hope and Excellence: How MPI USA’s WASSCE Scholarship is Changing Lives in Modakeke -By John Oyebanji

Students clutched their scholarship cheques with a renewed sense of purpose, while parents left with grateful hearts. The smiles, the tears, and the prayers were proof that the impact of this initiative extends far beyond today – it is a gift that will shape generations to come. One thing is certain, MPI is not just funding education, it is fueling dreams, and for the 200 students who walked home with their scholarship awards yesterday, the message was clear: Dream big, work hard, and never stop believing in the power of education. MPI USA has set the stage – it is now up to these students to rise to the occasion.

Yesterday, the Modakeke High School Hall was filled to the brim, not for a political rally or a community festival, but for something even more profound – the official presentation of the Modakeke Progressive International (MPI), USA’s WASSCE scholarship awards. The excitement in the air was electric, as students, parents, educators, and community leaders gathered in large numbers, filling every available seat, while many stood at the back, eager to witness a moment of academic empowerment.
This year, 200 deserving students from 32 schools across Modakeke were selected as beneficiaries of the scholarship program, a significant increase from the 150 students awarded in 2024. The breakdown was clear: 120 students from public schools and 80 from private schools, with a total sum of ₦8,023,800 disbursed. The distribution saw ₦4,787,000 allocated to public school students and ₦3,236,800 to those in private schools.
As the names of the recipients were called, the joy on their faces told a powerful story – one of hope, ambition, and renewed determination. Among them were 129 science students, 16 commercial students, and 55 art students, proving that MPI USA is committed to nurturing excellence across all academic disciplines.
From where I sat, I could hear whispers of gratitude from parents, some fervently praying for the success and well-being of MPI USA and its members, with their voices laced with emotion. One mother, her face lit with relief, turned to another and said, “God bless them for lifting this burden off us.” It was evident that this scholarship was more than just financial aid; it was a lifeline for many families – a chance for their children to sit for one of the most important exams of their lives without the weight of financial constraints. Some parents wiped away tears as their children’s names were called, a testament to how deeply impactful this initiative has been.
Dignitaries who made remarks at the gathering echoed similar sentiments, charging beneficiaries to focus on their studies and excel in their examinations. Their message was clear – this was not just a financial gift, but an investment in the future of Modakeke.
This scholarship scheme is not just about paying exam fees; it is about instilling confidence in students, easing financial burdens, and fostering a culture of academic excellence. It represents a vision for the future – one where every hardworking student, regardless of background has access to quality education. For many families, this initiative means one less worry, allowing them to focus on providing moral and emotional support to their children.
As the event came to a close, I walked away reflecting on the power of community-driven initiatives. MPI USA’s commitment to education is a testament to what can be achieved when people come together with a shared vision for uplifting the next generation.
With each passing year, this scholarship program is not only growing in numbers but also in impact, shaping the future of Modakeke, one student at a time, while inspiring other organisations and individuals to invest in education as a means of community transformation.
Wouldn’t it be amazing if more organizations followed suit?
