Iran Offers Seven-Day Plan to Reopen Hormuz, End War – Report

Iran says the Strait of Hormuz could reopen within seven days if conditions including a truce, sanctions relief and asset release are met.

Iran has reportedly presented the United States with a proposal that could see the Strait of Hormuz reopened within seven days as part of an effort to end the ongoing conflict.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi disclosed the proposal while speaking to media outlets in New York, where he is attending the United Nations General Assembly.

“If certain conditions are met, the strait will be open within seven days and talks will start,” Araghchi told media organisations including the New York Times and The Guardian.

The proposal was first reported by Japan’s Kyodo news agency, which cited a senior Iranian official on Tuesday. Iranian media later rejected the report, while officials in Tehran have yet to clearly confirm or reject the reported plan.

Araghchi also met with Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s envoy, for talks on Tuesday.

Tehran had previously presented seven conditions for ending the war and reopening Hormuz. Under the latest proposal, Araghchi said, all hostilities in the Middle East would have to stop for seven days, including fighting in Lebanon.

The conditions reportedly include the release of frozen Iranian assets worth at least $12 billion, the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil and the termination of the US naval blockade of Iran.

If those conditions are fulfilled, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz on the seventh day of the proposed truce.

Araghchi said he was waiting for a response from the US and claimed that China was backing the proposal.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is in the United States this week and is expected to hold talks with Trump.

Hossein Mohebi, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards, told AFP in an exclusive interview that Tehran was also demanding an end to hostilities in Yemen.

The latest proposal follows an earlier memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran in June. That agreement was intended to end the conflict, reopen Hormuz and pave the way for talks over Iran’s nuclear programme.

The understanding subsequently broke down after Iran fired on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the ships of deviating from their authorised routes.

Iran insists that ships obtain permission before entering the waterway, citing security and sovereignty concerns.

Vessels that fail to comply are regularly targeted, while US forces have periodically carried out attacks on Iranian coastal areas in response.
