The Bayelsa State Police Command says it has taken action in the investigation into the disappearance of one-year-old Amarachi Blessing Ogbonna, dismissing social media claims that authorities have been inactive in the case.

Amarachi, aged one year and 10 months, reportedly disappeared from a church premises in Bayelsa State on June 21, 2026.

The disappearance has generated significant concern online, with social media users questioning the pace of the police investigation.

Responding to the allegations, the Command said its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) commenced intensive investigations shortly after the case was reported.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, said the VCRU took over the investigation from Ekeki Division following a directive from the Commissioner of Police.

According to the police, investigations so far resulted in eight suspects being charged to court.

“Based on the facts and evidence so far established, eight suspects have been charged to court and are awaiting arraignment before the High Court of Bayelsa State, Yenagoa Judicial Division, in Charge No. BYHC/YHC/CR./81/2026,” the police said.

The Command added that individuals whose involvement had not been established were released on bail.

It explained that the delay in arraigning the suspects was caused by the vacation of the courts rather than any failure by the police to act. Proceedings, it said, resumed this week, with the case expected to continue.

The police said efforts to locate the missing child remain ongoing.

“The Command is pursuing all credible leads and will continue to take every lawful step necessary to unravel the circumstances surrounding her disappearance,” DSP Mohammed said.

The Command urged the public to avoid relying on unverified information circulating on social media, particularly in cases involving missing children.

It warned that unverified narratives could heighten public anxiety and make it more difficult to distinguish established facts from claims surrounding an active investigation.
