NDC Seeks Peace in Kano Chapter, Rejects Claims of Candidate Imposition
NDC leaders have moved to address a dispute between Kwankwasiyya members and long-standing party officials in Kano State.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has moved to defuse growing tensions in its Kano State chapter, assuring members that no candidates will be imposed as efforts continue to resolve disagreements between party stakeholders.
The party’s intervention follows reports of a dispute involving established NDC members and supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, who recently joined the party.
In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Osa Director on Tuesday, the NDC disclosed that its leadership had opened mediation talks aimed at restoring harmony and ensuring fair participation within the party.
As part of the process, leaders of the Kwankwasiyya Movement held a closed-door meeting with the party’s national leader, Henry Seriake Dickson, and other senior officials.
“A delegation of the national leadership of the Kwankwasiya movement last night met with the national leader, His Excellency Senator Henry Seriake Dickson and the leadership of the NDC,” the statement said.
“The close door meeting was aimed at resolving the issues between the Kwankwasiya movement and the legacy officials of NDC in Kano State.”
According to the party, the mediation process is being personally overseen by Dickson and other leaders to promote inclusiveness and strengthen internal cohesion.
“Senator Dickson and the NDC leadership are mediating in the process in order to enhance inclusion and participation by every party member,” the statement noted.
The NDC also sought to clear the air over reports that primary election results had already been released, insisting that no official list of candidates has been published.
“The NDC leadership will not impose candidates in Kano State, and indeed across the nation as the party cherishes the virtues of internal democracy,” the statement said.
Party leaders described the talks as successful, adding that “the meeting which lasted several hours was productive.”
Reaffirming its position, the NDC stated that any candidate list currently circulating should be disregarded.
“The NDC has not released any official results of its primary elections in any state. Hence, the public and party members are urged to disregard any such list in circulation,” the statement added.
The dispute is linked to reports surrounding the implementation of a power-sharing arrangement agreed upon after the defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement to the NDC.
The reported agreement allocated party offices and electoral tickets on a 60–40 basis in favour of the Kwankwasiyya bloc. However, tensions reportedly emerged after the circulation of an alleged candidates’ list, with some long-time party members expressing concerns over the distribution of positions.
