Peter Obi: ‘We believed INEC’ but chairman worked for opposition in 2023

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu of working for his political opposition during the 2023 general election.

Obi made the allegation in an exclusive interview with ARISE News while reflecting on the conduct of the 2023 election and the expectations placed on INEC to deliver a credible electoral process.

‘We took things for granted’

The former Anambra State governor said Nigerians trusted INEC’s assurances ahead of the 2023 election, believing that the commission would conduct the process fairly.

“In 2023, we took things for granted. We believed INEC. We believed what they said they would do,” Obi said.

He alleged that Yakubu had successfully convinced Nigerians and the international community that the commission would conduct the election properly, but claimed that the chairman was instead working for the opposition.

“The INEC Chairman convinced the world that he would do the right thing, when, in fact, he was working for the opposition,” he said.

‘This time, we will only trust them by doing the right thing ourselves’

Obi said the experience of 2023 had changed his approach to the electoral process, stressing that Nigerians should not rely solely on assurances from electoral authorities.

“This time, we will only trust them by doing the right thing ourselves,” Obi said.
